A Closer Look: Ben Shahn’s “The Passion of Sacco and Vanzetti”

In April 2026, we launched a campaign to raise funds for the conservation of one of the most important works of public art at Syracuse University: Ben Shahn’s The Passion of Sacco and Vanzetti. This monumental mosaic, installed in 1967, was Shahn’s last major work only a couple of years before his death. Based off of a series of gouache paintings he completed in the early 1930s, the mural remembers Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti whose 1927 trial and subsequent execution shook the world.
